| Chris, what would you use for cleaning a Copper roof?
Yesterday, a lady asked me to clean a small one in her back yard which covered a hot tub.
I declined from the possibility of my roof mix corroding the metal.

| I googled it, and found out a few mixes.
I am going to try varying strengths of
Vinegar, salt, phosphoric or oxalic acid.

Chris, you sprayed it with your roof mix? Yes, but add some sodium metasilicate, it is a corrosion inhibitor.

| What methods are most of you using when protecting copper gutters from our roof cleaning mix? I have roof coming up next week and the owner doesn't want the patina to get ruined. | |

| Hi all, I would say one should be careful while doing cleaning of copper roofs with acids as there might be any opposite reaction with the acidic mixture. Hiring professionals would be a better idea. Vinegar salt and phosphoric acid as you guys suggested are good but I think it can be done also pressure washing through mild citric acid solution which should have a concentration of about 5%.

| You can use a stiff metallic brush and a mixture of lemon juice and salt to clean your copper roof. If that mixture does not seem strong enough you can add white vinegar to the mix. Many chemicals sold may harm plants growing around your house. You should begin scrubbing at the highest point of your roof and work you way down.hope this helps you. | |

| The most common culprit is actually a blue-green algae known as Gloeocapsa Magma which is spread by airborne spores. The stains caused due to it would degrade the value of your home. These stains can be removed by cleaning but repeated cleaning with such chemicals would damage or reduce the life of your roof. A mixture of trisodium phosphate , bleach, and water can remove these stains. Oxygen bleach lightens stains but do not expect for dramatic change. Recently, roofing manufacturers like Roof Lines in Toronto have begun using copper granules into roofing products to produce algae resistant shingles, but be sure to specify the type of shingle you need. | |
